Take Bass Guitar Lessons to Learn Bass Guitar Playing Tips

You normally hear guitarists say that what they do is to make their guitars sing. How about the bassists? Well, what they should do is to make their bass guitars dance.

You see, the bass, together with the drums, is the one giving rhythm to the band's sound. What's more important is that it also keeps what it provides. It is safe to say that without the depth of the bass' resonance, the overall sound of the band will be wispy and flimsy.

While it may be dismissed as just providing this thick drone to complement the sounds of the guitar, the bass need not be limited to this. Remember about "dancing"? The bassist's job is to lay out a solid sonic foundation but at the same time be creative with the chords and their progression so as to liven up the songs.

To make this possible, you need to accustom yourself with the different bass playing techniques, which you could get an introduction to--and later on study--if you enroll in bass guitar lessons.

Others would say that it is best to discover the art of bass playing on your own (with the help sometimes of instructional videos, books, magazines, advice from fellow musicians, etc.), but attending a class is actually more reliable since it involves the help of a professional teacher and the time to study and practice in this learning method is more focused. Be beat-oriented

As earlier mentioned, the bass guitar and drums go together. As such, a great bass player should know how to make, keep, and follow a steady beat--in a crafty way, no less. Since the bass guitar is tasked for time-keeping, it is important for the bassist to be keen about both unaccented and accented beats so that the flow of the song is well-calculated. They say to make music takes heart. Well, to make bass music, it takes heart, primarily the way it beats.

Master your guitar notes and chords

Bass guitar lessons may require you to revisit your guitar notes and chords. Bass guitars are usually tuned the way regular guitars are. The only difference is that the guitar has more strings than the bass. But then playing both is basically the same. So it will help if you are well-read when it comes to your notes and chords. Bass playing, though, is more concerned about the notes. As such, you should know the notes--and the tunings as well--of ordinary guitars to be able to deftly play the bass.

Place your fingers where they are due

Have you seen how Red Hot Chili Pepper's Flea rocks the bass? How frenzied his fingers on the fretboard! It will be easier for you to be more experimental with the way you play if you have complete control of your fingers as you do so. In particular, the fingers of your left hand should be accurate in hitting the bass guitar fretboard since this is what will determine the clarity of each note.  But, of course, the right-hand fingers should not be left out since they are important when it comes to playing the bass using a holistic approach.

Work on your grip

The bass guitar is a sturdy musical equipment. You need strength to be able to play it. Thus, you should develop not just the dexterity of your fingers but also their power.  When you play, you should be able to accurately press down the strings for the notes to come out as thick and whole. There are many exercise offered in bass guitar lessons that could help you develop finger strength and flexibility.

What to do if you start losing interest in playing guitar

There may be times when you may feel your interest in playing start to wane a little bit. There are a number of things you can do to get back on track.

Take a week off. This doesn't mean to fiddle with your guitar five minutes a day. Don't touch your guitar for the entire week. When you pick it up again, it will feel and sound better than ever. Plus, you'll find that you have a number of new ideas to try or you may hear a song that you'd really like to play.

Find new music to play. It's easy than ever to find guitar music. And if you can't find something, take a song you've already learned and play it in a different way. The song you learned to finger pick will sound quite different when being strummed.

Put together some loops / backing tracks to play with. You can find background tracks fairly easily online. In some cases, there will be a small fee to join a website. If you find a website that you like, make sure they have a good selection of loops and backing tracks to choose from.

Find one aspect of playing guitar and focus on that for a few days. It could be finger picking, bar chords, scales, learning new rhythms or working on your speed licks. If you're at the point of losing a little interest in playing guitar, make sure the aspect of playing you focus on is not too difficult or challenging. It may only add to your disinterest.

If you really feel industrious, take the aspect of playing guitar that gives you the most trouble and work entirely on that. It may be a little difficult and frustrating at first but you'll be glad you stuck to it and mastered it so you can move on as a player.

Take a look at your guitar as an instrument. Find out how it was put together, what kind of woods are used, what the electronics do or how you can customize your guitar so it's one of a kind. For electric guitar, there a number of different types of pick ups available along with a myriad of effects pedals that can make playing a lot more fun. You might find just the sound you are looking for and the inspiration to get back to practicing. 

Take a shot at being a songwriter. You don't have to come up with a hit song right out of the gate, you can do as little as choose a few chords and put them together in an interesting way. One of the things I ask my students to do is come up with a melody, a signature riff or bass line they've never heard before.

Find another guitar player to play with. You might be surprised how many people play the guitar. The person a couple houses down from you or someone you say hello to every day in school might be learning guitar too.

Try a different guitar. This has always been a good way to renew interest in playing. You may find that the guitar you've been using is more difficult to play than it should be and is part of you losing interest. Guitar necks vary quite a bit and sometimes it's a matter of finding one that is a good match for the size and strength of your hands. Even properly setting up your current guitar and putting on a set of new strings can really make a difference.

Teach someone else to play. One of reasons I've continued to teach for so long is it makes me a better player and really adds to my enjoyment of the guitar. You may find that you're not really cut out to be a teacher or that you really enjoy helping someone learn to play. Either way, it will give you a new perspective on the guitar.

Take some lessons. A good guitar teacher usually charges between and 5 a month (four half-hour lessons) so it's very important that you do a little research on local teachers before deciding.

When you first decide that you want to learn to play guitar, things can be a bit confusing. You're filled with all this anticipation, but most people don't even know where to start. And that can be very hindering. Well the very first thing you need is a guitar. Yup, before you can understand guitar you actually need to have a guitar.

A beginner guitar

plenty of people actually question what a good beginner guitar is. My answer is that there is no true beginner guitar. Though, I do have some advice for why I think that beginners should get a certain kind of guitar. Personally I think its good to learn guitar on a pretty low-grade guitar. The reason is  if you learn on a cheap guitar then, not merely will you appreciate the more expensive guitars more, but you will also feel the distinction when you upgrade, and perhaps realize that more luxurious doesn't  essentially mean better.

Also Its simpler for a beginner to learn to play guitar on either a classical nylon string guitar or an electric guitar. The reason is that the strings have less tension and are easier to play without harming your fingers. myself I learned on a really cheap steal string guitar, even today, it is actually the hardest guitar I have ever played. That guitar completely calloused my finger tips because I played it every day for a year, till I finally upgraded. Now I don't recommend you get a guitar that is tough to play, trust me if I had a choice I would rather the strings be easier to play. But when your guitar isn't perfect, you definitely value better guitars, regardless of the price. But if you're an acoustic guitar fan especially if your on a budget I recommend that you learn guitar on a classical guitar, and many are pretty cheap.

Play Guitar

So now you have your guitar, now you need to learn to play guitar. So, what is the ideal way to learn guitar? There are lots of options out there for the new guitarist. however, which one is the best? Well lets look at the options.

You can learn from a teacher.

If you learn from a private teacher it could be good because you have someone right there with you who is a professional and they can correct you when you mess up. However teachers can be very expensive and they are not always reliable.

You can learn to play guitar from a guide

Guitar guides are full of information, and can help you understand chord patterns very easily. Nevertheless books can not successfully teach certain techniques, especially if you need to hear the technique. However for theory, scales and chords books are superb.

You can learn by video

With video you can actually see whats going on and correct your techniques. However with videos you feel like you have to keep up with the teacher and your playing and willingness can suffer from this. Especially since its hard to follow tabs or notes when they keep moving…

You can learn to play online

Now If you have a computer this is surely the best choice. Learning online combines the best of all the previous options.
